How to Follow Your Passion and Build a Business as a Mumma
Let’s be real for a second—being a mum is a full-time job. Add a business into the mix, and well, you’ve got yourself a whole new level of busy. But here’s the thing: you can follow your passion and build the business you’ve been dreaming of, all while raising your little ones. It’s not easy, but it’s absolutely possible, and today I want to chat about how you can do it.
First of all, if you’re a mum juggling the chaos of life—running a household, caring for your kids, maybe even working a part-time job—and still managing to chase your dream of building a business, I see you. I really do. It’s tough, and I won’t sugarcoat it. But I’ve worked with so many amazing mums who are doing it, and they’re making it work. And guess what? You can, too.
When I started my business, my kids were young. My youngest was 3, and let me tell you, juggling business with toddlers was no joke. Fast forward to today, and I’m so proud of how far I’ve come—but I also know how incredibly hard it was to balance it all back then. I didn’t have a “village” of support, and there were days when I felt like I was running on empty, just trying to keep everything together.
But here’s the thing: your business can be the spark that keeps you going. It's the thing that fuels your passion and gives you a sense of accomplishment beyond motherhood. And that’s so important. You’re not just a mum—you’re YOU. You deserve to follow your dreams and create something that lights you up.
Now, let’s talk about how to actually make this happen.
1. Give Yourself Grace
You’re going to have days when you feel like you’re not doing enough. Trust me, we all have those days. But here’s the truth: you’re doing your best, and that’s enough. Give yourself grace. It’s okay if the laundry’s piling up or you didn’t manage to get a full workday in. As long as you’re making progress, no matter how small, you’re moving in the right direction.
2. Be Intentional with Your Time
When you’re a mum with a business, time is precious. So be intentional with it. Whether you’re waking up an hour earlier to get some work done or sneaking in time during your kids’ nap, you’ve got to make the most of the pockets of time you have. Schedule your work hours and stick to them—just like you would for any other job. And don’t forget to schedule some you time, too. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and taking a break is just as important as getting stuff done.
3. Set Boundaries
One of the toughest things about balancing a business with family life is setting boundaries. You might have well-meaning family and friends telling you that you should be spending more time with your kids or that it’s not the right time to start a business. But guess what? You are the expert of your own life. If you feel like now is the time to go for it, then do it. Don’t let anyone else’s opinion stop you from following your heart.
4. Celebrate the Wins (Big and Small)
This one is huge. It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget to celebrate how far you’ve come. Every step forward is progress, and you deserve to acknowledge that. Whether you signed your first client, launched your website, or simply got through a busy week without burning out—celebrate it! These little wins add up and remind you that you’re on the right path.
5. Ask for Help
We all need help sometimes. If you’re lucky enough to have a supportive partner, ask them to pitch in. If not, consider outsourcing tasks or getting help from a friend or family member. Whether it’s child care, help with household tasks, or even hiring a VA for business admin, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You don’t have to do it all alone.
6. Stay True to Your Why
When things get tough (and they will), remember why you started in the first place. Whether you want to create financial freedom for your family, build a legacy for your kids, or simply follow your passion—keep that vision front and center. Your “why” will keep you grounded and motivated when you feel like giving up.
Being a mum and an entrepreneur is a crazy ride, but it’s also one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. And no matter what stage you’re at—whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been building for a while—remember that you’re not alone in this. You’ve got this, mama. Keep going, and keep chasing that dream.
