Breaking Through Your Fears to Elevate Your Interiors Business
Ever feel like fear is holding you back from achieving your biggest goals? If so, you’re not alone. In this post, we're diving deep into the fears that can keep even the most talented interior designers and stylists from reaching their true potential. Fear of failure, fear of judgment, imposter syndrome, self-doubt—these are the roadblocks we all face. The good news? They don't need to control your journey.
The Truth About Fear in Business
Fear isn’t something that completely disappears. I still face it, and I’m sure I will in the future. But what I’ve learned is that fear is often a sign that you’re on the verge of a breakthrough. Think of it as a marker that you’ve reached the edge of your comfort zone. To achieve growth—whether that’s hitting new income levels, gaining more visibility, or becoming the go-to designer in your niche—you have to push past it.
So, whether it’s hitting the “buy now” button to invest in your growth, posting a speaking-to-camera video, starting that podcast, reaching out to a luxury home builder, or raising your prices, facing your fears is non-negotiable. Your mindset is the foundation for any big leap in your business.
A Story of Trusting My Intuition
Let me share a story to highlight just how important mindset is. Early in my career, I was contacted by a client who wanted me to manage and design a major home renovation, followed by styling the space. Up until that point, I had only styled homes. My ego was screaming, "You can’t do this! You don’t have the experience! You’re going to mess it up!"
But my intuition whispered something different. I had renovated my own homes and completed training. I knew I was capable. So, despite the noise in my head, I said yes. The result? I designed a stunning fireplace and entertainment unit, made impactful suggestions for the kitchen layout, and, most importantly, had an ecstatic client. Did I make mistakes? Sure. But I proved to myself that I could handle it.
Shifting Fear to Empowerment
Mindset impacts every action you take, from showing your face on social media to confidently pricing your services. If you can reframe fear as a signal for growth rather than a stop sign, it changes everything. Here’s a simple exercise that helps:
Create two lists—one for your fears and another for empowering statements. For example, if you write down, "I’m not experienced enough," reframe it as, "I bring unique, fresh ideas that benefit my clients."
Building Confidence with Affirmations
Affirmations are a powerful tool I use and teach. Create a list of your strengths and achievements, and turn them into affirmations like, “I am a talented stylist” or “My design ideas elevate any space.” Record yourself reading them aloud for 5 minutes and listen to it regularly.
Embracing Your Unique Magic
Everyone has a unique blend of magic that sets them apart. List your unique skills, experiences, and traits. What do people often praise you for? What projects made you feel most alive?
I once worked with a designer who felt lost despite her success. After refining her niche, she realized her passion was working alongside builders and architects during new builds. Positioning herself as a luxury designer who bridges the gap between builders and homeowners gave her the clarity and confidence she needed.
Why Perfection is Overrated
Perfectionism can be a massive roadblock. I see so many beautifully curated social media pages, but what truly makes someone stop scrolling? You. When you show up authentically, sharing your real self, potential clients connect with you on a deeper level. That’s what leads to trust and, ultimately, bookings.
Start small: Go live on Instagram, share a quick tip on camera, or post a styling tutorial. Each step builds confidence, and before you know it, it’ll be as natural as breathing.
Surround Yourself with Positivity
Make sure you’re surrounded by peers and mentors who lift you up. Listen to podcasts that inspire you, lean into your affirmation recordings, and celebrate your wins each week.
Mindset Is the Core of Your Strategy
Remember: Mindset isn’t just part of your business strategy—it is your strategy. Empowered action leads to empowered results.
