How to Nail Your Next Interiors or Brand Photoshoot: My 10-Step Action Plan!
I’ve just returned from a fabulous girls' trip to the Gold Coast—seriously, so much sunshine and good vibes! To wrap it up on a high, I squeezed in a brand-new photoshoot for my business. Now, I’ve done many of these over the years (we’re talking at least 10), and let me tell you, there’s a lot that goes into making a photoshoot amazing. So, I thought, why not share my top tips with you?
Whether you're just starting your interiors career, going through a rebrand, expanding your team, or you’ve evolved as a designer (and haven’t had new shots in over two years), keeping your visuals fresh is so important. Ideally, you should be getting new headshots and interior photos at least every 12 months.
Here’s my tried-and-true 10-step action plan for nailing your next interiors or brand photoshoot! 🚀
1. Choose Your Location Wisely
Whether it's a completed interior project, a rented shoot location, or your own home, make sure the space reflects your signature style. You don’t want to post images of styles you don’t love or want more of! If you’re new to the industry, try photographing parts of your own home or rent a location that fits your vibe—like my dream studio on the Gold Coast!
2. Research & Book Your Photographer
Check out who other designers in your area are using. If you’re on a budget, look for an up-and-coming photographer—I've worked with a few gems over the years! Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Roshi McCartin, and she absolutely nailed it!
3. Create a Photoshoot Brand Vision
This is a must! Put together a document with words that describe your brand, inspiration images, and ideas for the shots you want. Include everything—from outfit inspo to props and accessories—so you and your photographer are totally on the same page.
4. Plan Your Look
Your outfit should match your brand's vibe. High-end designer? Go chic. Approachable and casual? Keep it smart casual. Have at least three different outfit options, and mix and match them for different shots. Don’t forget the jewelry, hair, and makeup!
5. Pack Your Props
Think fresh flowers, stylish décor, or that cute cake for a kitchen scene—whatever suits the vibe you’re going for. Be prepared with everything packed up and ready to go on shoot day.
6. Clean the Space!
No fingerprints on the fridge or dust on the floor—clean everything! You’d be surprised what shows up in photos, so take the time to make everything spotless.
7. Style Your Spaces in Advance
Have a plan for where you want to shoot and how you want each area styled. Perched on a sofa, standing behind the kitchen island, fluffing a cushion—it’s all about having your vision set before the photographer arrives.
8. Be Time-Savvy
If you’ve only booked a short shoot, time is of the essence. Make sure your clothes, props, and everything else are ready to go, so you can jump right into it when the photographer arrives.
9. Have Fun!
Your energy will shine through in your photos! Put on some background music, smile, laugh, and enjoy the experience. Remember, your vibe attracts your tribe!
10. Don’t Forget Video Content!
While you're at it, capture some video content too! Videos are such a great way to connect with your audience and give them a behind-the-scenes peek at your creative process.
Most importantly try not to stress about your shoot, everything always works out exactly as it should. Follow these tips, be prepared and have some fun
