How to Attract Your Dream Clients: The Magic Formula for Creative Freedom
Is there anything better than that perfect client who slides into your DMs, loves everything you do, and gives you full creative freedom? Imagine being asked to design their entire home, with no restrictions and a deep appreciation for your unique style. If you haven’t experienced this yet, don’t worry—they're out there, just waiting to discover you!
The First Step: Niching Down
Attracting dream clients starts with niching down. A few weeks ago, I talked about the importance of this, so if you missed it, go back to Episode 2, Season 2, and catch up!
When you figure out what you want to be known for, attracting your dream clients becomes much easier. For example, when I niched into being a coastal stylist, I began to share my own unique take on coastal style—natural wall art, coastal prints (always with a palm!), splashes of greenery, and fresh, calming colors. This became my signature style.
Soon, my Instagram feed became a cohesive grid of my projects, mood boards, and flat lays. This visual consistency is key. Your dream clients might stumble upon your posts, save them as inspiration, and start stalking your page to see if you’re the stylist for them.
Understanding Your Ideal Client
But it’s not just about sharing your work. To attract dream clients, you need to understand them intimately. Have a chat with past dream clients, or create polls and questions in your Instagram stories.
Here’s what you need to know:
What are they struggling with in creating their dream home? What’s holding them back? What questions are they asking?
What are their big dreams for their home? What’s their ideal outcome? What images are they saving for inspiration?
Who are they? Are they families, couples, or singles? New moms wanting to style their baby’s room, or older women with more money wanting to downsize and start fresh?
What’s their budget? Do they want luxe on a budget, or are they a corporate couple with more to spend?
Once you’ve nailed down these details, you’ll have a crystal-clear picture of who your dream client is and what they’re looking for. Then, you can create content that speaks directly to them.
Creating Content That Attracts
Let’s say your dream clients are young families looking for luxe on a budget. You could share tips on mixing high and low-cost items, show images of spaces styled with affordable pieces, or even create IKEA hacks. They’ll be attracted to your content, save it, and when they realize they can’t quite get the look they want on their own, they’ll jump at the chance to hire you.
Instagram’s algorithm loves this kind of engagement. When your audience likes, comments, shares, or saves your posts, the algorithm pushes it out to even more people with similar interests.
Nailing Your Bio
Your bio is prime real estate. It should tell potential clients exactly who you are, how you can help them, and include a credibility piece like a feature in a magazine or a testimonial from a happy client. Within seconds, they should know if you’re someone they want to follow.
Intuition Matters
Here’s a piece of advice I give often: trust your intuition. I once worked with a client who looked perfect on paper, but our personalities didn’t click. It taught me that a dream client isn’t just about the project; it’s about how you feel working with them.
Discovery calls are a fantastic way to get a feel for your client, understand their project, and see if you’re a good fit. They also help seal the deal—just make sure you stay in control of the conversation so it doesn’t turn into a free interior consult!
Final Thoughts
If you’re attracting clients or projects that don’t light you up, it’s time to make a change. Niche down, understand your ideal client, create content that speaks to them, and listen to your intuition. Soon, you’ll start to see a shift in the type of people and projects you attract.
Remember, your dream clients are out there—they just need to know you’re the perfect fit for them!
